State Rep. Jaime Greene on Tuesday touted an automatic income tax cut that is expected to occur within the next two months — giving people across Macomb, St. Clair and Lapeer counties needed tax relief in their paychecks to help with the rising cost of inflation.

The individual state income tax rate should be reduced this year across the board due to a law passed in 2015 by the Republican Legislature and signed by Gov. Snyder. The law requires an automatic cut if state revenues significantly outpace inflation from one fiscal year to the next.

“Michiganders deserve immediate tax relief to help fight against high inflationary costs, and thankfully people should start receiving needed relief in the coming months,” said Greene, R-Richmond. “Because of a Republican law and sound fiscal management, the income tax rate should be automatically rolled back allowing families to keep more money in their pockets.

“The price spikes we’re seeing for everyday items are hard on everyone,” Greene said. “People need relief now, not later.”
