State Rep. Ken Borton today expressed his frustration with Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Lansing Democrats for seeking to block an automatic income tax cut that would otherwise take effect this year, helping working families and small businesses when they need it most.

“The governor, and Democrats in the Legislature are actively standing in the way of tax relief at a time when residents in my district are already finding it difficult to make ends meet,” said Borton, R-Gaylord. “Folks throughout the state are struggling with rampant inflation and the ever-increasing costs of essentials. Republican lawmakers went to bat for our constituents, proposing a fair and transparent tax plan that would provide immediate relief for all. Our governor and Democrats alike are aiming to stop an automatic tax cut by sneakily shifting money around to fund corporate giveaways. This completely sidesteps governmental accountability, and transparency – a shameful truth for Michiganders. We are sitting on a state surplus of over $8 billion. Instead of throwing hundreds of millions of dollars at major corporations, the governor must shift her focus and help the residents in her own backyard.”

A law passed by the Republican-led Legislature in 2015 is expected to trigger an automatic cut to the individual income tax rate this year. The cut will be triggered because general fund revenues significantly outpaced inflation year over year, but the governor has proposed a plan to lawmakers that could prevent the trigger by retroactively diverting revenues from the general fund into the Strategic Outreach and Attraction Reserve (SOAR), which is used to fund corporate projects. Borton said the maneuver would jeopardize the automatic tax cut while undermining key accountability procedures that were originally established for SOAR.
