Rep. VanderWall votes to bring jobs to Michigan
RELEASE|March 2, 2023

State Rep. Curtis VanderWall issued the following statement on the expected tax cut for working families after Republicans thwarted a Democrat plan to undo a tax cut.

“My fellow Republicans and I came to Lansing to deliver solutions for the people of Michigan,” said VanderWall, of Ludington. “I am happy to report that we have secured a tax cut that will save working families and small businesses real dollars. Back in 2015, Republicans put in a plan to automatically lower taxes if our state revenue was too big compared to spending. Rather than allowing this tax cut, Gov. Whitmer proposed to raise government spending by offering one-time $180 checks to each Michigan tax filer (or $90 each if you’re a married couple filing together). The automatic tax cut will save the average family $120 per year EVERY year. Working Michiganders are smart enough to realize that $120 every year is better than $180 once. If this is how Democrats do math, we need to make some changes.”

House Bill 4001 was passed out of the Senate late Tuesday night without immediate effect. This will allow the permanent, automatic tax cut to trigger this Spring, lowering the state income tax from 4.25% to 4.05%, which will save the average Michigan household $126 per year. VanderWall also voted to bring jobs to Michigan by voting to pass House Bill 4016, which appropriates economic development dollars to develop a Ford battery plant.

“This plan will bring high quality jobs to Michigan,” VanderWall said. “We are the party of economic development, and this factory will help develop the area, and improve our state’s competitiveness. Michigan has always been the world center of auto manufacturing, and this plant will continue that tradition by creating cutting-edge batteries. It’s a Michigan-made and Michigan-owned project.”

HB 4016 was passed out of the House late Wednesday night with bipartisan support, and now advances to the governor’s desk for further consideration.
