State Rep. Timmy Beson’s legislation to rename a Bay County bridge in honor of U.S. Army Sgt. Kristopher Gould was signed into law today by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.

“In life and death, Kristopher Gould devoted himself to service,” said Beson, of Bangor Township. “He wasted no time to answer the call to duty; he signed up for the National Guard while still in high school, and he joined the Army several years later. Sgt. Gould lived a courageous life. His sacrifice proves it. Now the bridge near his family home, which he crossed countless times, is officially named in his honor. May God bless Sgt. Kristopher Gould and his legacy.”

Beson’s House Bill 4700 designates the M-13 bridge across Cheboyganing Creek in southern Bay County as the “Sergeant Kristopher J. Gould Memorial Bridge.”

On February 27, 2011, Gould was killed by a bomb in Afghanistan’s Ghazni Province, while serving his second deployment to the country since he joined the Army in 2007. In addition to his two tours with the Army, Gould was also deployed once to Iraq with the Michigan Army National Guard. He first enlisted in the guard in 2003.

Once the state designates a memorial bridge or highway, signs to display the name are purchased with private donations. The Gould family has already raised the necessary funds to pay for signage.
