State Rep. David Martin this week praised the signing of legislation investing $152 million to support runway upgrades and infrastructure improvements at Selfridge Air National Guard Base, helping prepare for the arrival of the F-15EX fighter mission and KC-46A tankers.

Martin said the investment will support Michigan’s economy and workforce, including companies in Genesee and Oakland counties that support the defense and aerospace industries.

“Selfridge has long been one of Michigan’s most important military assets, and this investment helps ensure it remains a cornerstone of our state’s defense and economic strength for decades to come,” Martin said. “This is the kind of bipartisan effort that delivers real results for Michigan families, workers and service members.”

The funding supports efforts tied to the incoming aircraft mission and strengthens Selfridge’s long-term viability. The future of the base had been in jeopardy because the current aircraft stationed at Selfridge were scheduled to be retired and decommissioned by 2029, raising concerns about the long-term mission and economic impact on the region. The base supports thousands of jobs directly and indirectly through Michigan’s defense industry and generates hundreds of millions of dollars in annual economic activity.

Martin credited state and federal leaders, military officials and members of Michigan’s congressional delegation for helping move the project forward.

“When leaders come together around a shared goal, Michigan wins,” Martin said. “Protecting and strengthening Selfridge means protecting jobs, supporting our military and reinforcing Michigan’s leadership in aerospace and national defense.”

Martin also noted the importance of continued investment in infrastructure supporting both national security and economic growth.

“This mission will create opportunities for communities across Michigan tied to manufacturing, skilled trades and defense industries,” Martin said. “The future of Selfridge is far more secure, and that is great news for our state.”
